Bonjour Mes Amis,

Valentine’s Day wine? Saint-Amour says it all!
Most of us think of roses, chocolates and Champagne as a gift for your significant other on Valentine’s Day. What if what’s really desired is a fine, red wine? Look no further than the southern reaches of Burgundy, to Beaujolais, and more specifically, to the town of Saint-Amour. What could be more appropriate?

Saint-Amour
Local lore suggest that this region was named after a Roman soldier (St. Amateur) who converted to Christianity after escaping death, and who established a church near the area. The wines from Saint-Amour are noted for their spicy flavors with aromas of red fruit, peony, peach, kirsch, spice, and mignonette. Designated as a Cru in 1946, Saint-Amour is known today as the most romantic Beaujolais of all. In fact, 20 to 25 percent of Saint-Amour sales occur in February, and a label featuring Cupid is created just for Valentine’s Day – testaments to this Cru’s romantic character.

Domaine de Cheveau Saint-Amour ‘Les Champs Grillés’ 2012 $24.99
The Domaine Cheveau estate is located in the hamlet of Solutré-Pouilly in the heart of the appellation of Pouilly-Fuissé, although the family has holdings throughout the Maconnais, as well as in Beaujolais. The fourteen-hectare estate was established by André Cheveau in 1950, and is now run by his two grandsons, Nicolas and Julien. The “Champs Grillés” lieu-dit is situated in the heart of the Saint Amour appellation. The wine has a beautiful spicy nose, with red berry fruit, kirsch, as well hints of peach. Medium weight, the wine will pair well with a wide range of dishes, including roast duck, rabbit, and as an apéritif wine, with soft cheeses such as, Brie, Vacherouse, Brebicet, or Camembert. The Saint-Amour is aged in stainless steel and bottled within a year of the harvest.

For the more traditionally-minded, we offer a fabulous Rosé Champagne.

NV Chamapgne Aubry Rosé Brut $65.00
The NV Brut Rose is classy and   elegant through and through. It shows lovely energy and focus in its freshly cut sweet roses, red berries and minerals. All of the aromas and flavors flow gracefully from this tense, precise Rose. Floral notes add further brightness and polish on the striking finish. This is a terrific showing. The estate’s Rose is 45% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 15% Meunier, which is blended in as still red wine, an unusual approach that works beautifully here. Disgorged June 2015.

Vive la fête de l’amour!
